New York Jets Stadium

Ironically, the New York Jets stadium is neither located in New York, nor is it named in any way shape or form after the Jets. The place that the team calls home is Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Giants Stadium opened in 1976, but the New York Jets didn't start playing there until 1984. Prior to moving to the Meadowlands Complex, the Jets played their home games at Shea Stadium in Flushing, New York. New York lost their first game at Giants Stadium, falling 23-17 to Pittsburgh on September 6. In that game, Bobby Humphery took a kickoff 97-yards for a touchdown, but it was not enough to overcome the Steelers. Giants Stadium has a maximum seating capacity of over 80,000, making it the second largest stadium in the National Football League today, and is also some to the MetroStars of Major League Soccer.

Is a new New York Jets Stadium on the Horizon?

First it was the Polo Grounds, then is was Shea Stadium, and currently it is Giants Stadium. Where will the next New York Jets stadium be located? There were plans for the Jets to move into a new stadium in Manhattan within the next five years. The venue was either to be called West Side Stadium or the New York Sports and Convention Center, and was even set to host Super Bowl XLIV in the year 2010. However, most of the $1 billion plus that would have been required to build the facility was to be funded via tax revenue. Public reaction to the plan was split pretty much down the middle, but ultimately the New York legislature refused to contribute $300 million in public funds to the project. Currently, the team is in talks with New Jersey Sports and Exhibition Authority (the organization that runs the Meadowlands) about sharing an all-new facility with the Giants. That $750 million stadium is expected to open in 2009.
